Crocodiles against sexism and street harassment

Everyday, women going to public spaces are receiving unwanted comments and gestures from part of male strangers. Far from being innocuous, street harassment is a form of violence against women, threatening their safety and security in public places, and limiting their mobility.

So as to address this issue, the French illustrator Thomas Mathieu created the comic book: “Les crocodiles”, illustrating women’s experience of street harassment and sexism. Too often, it is minimised, reduced to “deserved” or flattering “compliments”. To balance this prevalent male vision, and highlight women’s feelings about this phenomenon, T. Mathieu collected their personal stories of sexism and violence. He drew them, choosing to depict men as crocodiles to stress women’s perception in a context of widespread male violence against women.
