Toys, gender stereotypes and gender violence

Are toys somehow influencing children and contributing to their gendered construction and vision of the world? If yes, and if we assume that gender inequality is at the roots of gender violence, do gendered toys contribute to gender violence? This is the kind of questions debated in Australia these days. Indeed, the political group “Greens” initiated a Senate inquiry to determine the role of children’s toys in contributing to gender stereotypes and towards gender violence.

‘It’s worth having a discussion around that as well as around everything else, such as the harms of pornography contributing to gender stereotypes and violence against women,’ Ms Tankard Reist, co-founder of the organisation Collective Shout, said.
