Climate Change, Environmental Injustice, Rights of Nature, Refugee and Migrant Rights…these are connected issues relevant to us all, but they are often presented in isolation. It is time to take action and see the connections. Environmental Justice is a key issue, but what does it mean? Basically, it means that all people have the same access to safe and healthy living conditions. However, at present, some people are enjoying the benefits of development: energy, clean water, and high living and consumer standards, whilst others are paying the price. Every day we can see images of desperate people abandoning their homes, turned into refugees by “natural” disasters, but there is little talk about the justice owed to these environmental refugees. Other images evoke “invasions of migrants” without questioning why increasing parts of the planet have suddenly become uninhabitable to them, and without explanations about who is responsible or what can be done. The SAME world project lead by CIES onlus and co-funded by Europe Aid, is implemented by 13 organizations in 10 different EU Countries, with the support of 12 additional associations from the global north and south. In 2015 the project will actively engage with the European Year of Development goals and campaigns. As one of the partners CEPS Projectes Socials will travel in October with the SAME world project to the EXPO 2015 in Milan and take part in awareness raising activities about Environmental Justice.
